Coming soon… SpaceChem on the iPad!

It’s taken more work than I anticipated, but I’m happy to announce that SpaceChem Mobile will be available on the Apple App Store for the iPad on October 1st! SpaceChem Mobile is a direct port of SpaceChem, meaning it’s almost exactly the same, but with a few notable differences:

  • The controls have been reimagined for touch (an obvious change), including a new way to quickly place arrow instructions (hold a button, drag a path).
  • The toolbar has been moved to the top to make it easier to place instructions.
  • The main campaign does not include boss battles or the story and is easier to progress through (more optional pipelines, specifically).
  • Video recording and forum signature generation are not available.
  • It only costs $5.99!

ResearchNet is fully functional in SpaceChem Mobile and will receive new issues of the Journal of Reaction Engineering at the same time as the PC version of SpaceChem.

If you have any questions, please ask them in the comments!

I don’t have a iPad, but I can imagine how awesome it would be to play on one. *-*

    ANDROID!

    Please :S

I have an iPad as well, so I’ll get this, but that means I need to carry around two tablets :(

    Android please :D

  3. Manu September 23, 2011 6:15 pm

Do we get a discount if we already own the pc version ;P

  4. Zach September 23, 2011 6:57 pm

@Matt: If the iPad version does well we’ll look into bringing SpaceChem to Android tablets.

@Manu: Unfortunately not, unless you consider the $5.99 price a discount from a higher, unspecified price?

Why no story in the iPad version? I’ve played several of your games, and I always get a kick out of the unique settings, even though they’re mostly implied. I thought bringing that more front and center in SpaceChem was really cool, especially since the setting is less bizarre on the face of it (it’s “just space”).

@Dan: From a usability standpoint the boss battles just didn’t work on the iPad, so instead of having them there and suck we removed them. Unfortunately, without the boss battles the story made zero sense, so it had to go as well.

A big thanks to you Zach!!! For me Spacechem is something like a killer game… I found one game like your’s on the iPad, but without the depth of Spacechem. Thinks to adapt your old games also or remake it for a better graphics and sell it!

I allways wondered why I can’t drag a movement instruction around and hold a direction key or wasd to change it’s direction.

…but this version is translate in italian?
    Hello Zach! :)

  10. Zach September 27, 2011 4:51 pm

The version of SpaceChem Mobile that will launch on October 1st is English-only (something that may change in the future).

I’m still hoping that we’ll be able to ship an Italian translation for the PC sometime soon.

For those of us with an Android tablet but no friends with an iPad, anywhere we could donate in way that counts towards the “does well” side of things in hope of making an Android version feasable? :3

Hi Zach! Been playing the original Spacechem for so long and just now, what I was hoping for came true, Spacechem for iPad! Waited not a second and bought it… started it.. new profile… uuuh.. Why doesn’t the keyboard come up to enter a profile name ? AAAARGH! I can’t begin playing now :D Is this a bug ? (Other than that, thank you SO much for creating an iPad version!)

  13. Martijn October 1, 2011 7:35 am

Sorry! Figured it out! Seems the text input isn’t a first responder, so you need to touch in the modal view’s textbox to bring the keyboard up! Off to play now!

bought the game for my iPad 2 & immediately fell in love. the music, presentation and game mechanics are all top notch.

my only qualm – and i wanted to bring this up here before i wrote my review – is that the first thing i read upon starting the game was your message RE: the PC/mac/linux versions. it essentially says, “thanks for buying the game – if you want the story please play the pc version.”

you mention the boss fights are impractical on the iPad (a shame) – so the story has to get the boot as well. might i suggest removing that original message from the game? makes me feel like i bought a gimped version of the game (if only for a second) and perhaps other buyers may feel the same way.

  15. Zach October 4, 2011 4:58 pm

@jonbones: We reached the same conclusion you did. Look for “improved wording” in the next update!

  16. jonbones October 4, 2011 5:15 pm

probably a good move! here’s a suggestion from neoGAF user mclem – i think it would really improve the game:

“the game needs the ability to let you save out solutions so you’re not too attached to them to experiment with new methods.”

perhaps each level can have 3 save spots associated with it – this way you can make bolder design choices without worrying about memorizing a great solution you came up with earlier. my current method of saving screenshots is a bit cumbersome.

hopefully that’s not too difficult to implement.

Love this game for the PC. Please go ahead and make that Android version!

  18. Genomancer January 6, 2012 7:14 pm

Another vote/request for SC on Android, with a question… is the type of person who enjoys games like this perhaps more likely to buy one tablet OS over another? Specifically, folks who choose to buy android devices often like the ability heavily customize, analyze, fidget… and if that’s true, the game’s success on iOS might not be a good indicator of how it would sell on other platforms. Just food for thought. :)

    Thanks,
    G

I for one would jump on an Android version! Do want!

  20. Stefan January 14, 2012 2:46 pm

Hi Zach, thanks a lot for a great game. Pretty much the most intelligent game I’ve come across yet on the iPad. Just one small niggle: when I finally come up with a solution and run it, the pathways will be all messed up when I later return to that same level. (Either to try and improve it further, or to brag to my wife.;-) ) What seems to work is to fix everything and then not to run the program, but exit the reactor/level. But as soon as I return and run the program, everything will be messed up again when I next return after that. Can this be fixed, please? Thanks!

  21. Zach January 14, 2012 6:44 pm

@Stefan: We just learned about this a few days ago and are currently looking into it. When we find a fix we’ll release an update. Sorry for the inconvenience!

  22. Thaaron January 17, 2012 12:25 am

Absolutely love your game. No iPad for me but I would LOVE to buy an Android version.

Have you thought about doing a kickstarter for an Android version?

  23. Zach January 19, 2012 6:24 am

@Thaaron: This isn’t the kind of thing I’d be comfortable kickstarting. There is a possibility that we will do an Android tablet port, so you should sign up for our newsletter if you’re interested.

  24. steve46 January 21, 2012 12:16 pm

is it possible to transfer your progress between the PC game and the IPAD (both ways would be great)

  25. Ryan January 22, 2012 5:20 am

Mark me down in the “Android Tablet but no iPad” column. I’d personally be willing to pay the PC price to get SpaceChem for my Android table. Surely, you like the prospect of getting $4 out of me and will thus be enticed into porting it tomorrow. I’m standing by with my credit card. Waiting.

  26. Ben April 4, 2012 1:09 pm

As if it needed reiterating: I would buy this for Android in an instant. Only have a work iPad that could be taken away at any moment, so I don’t want to buy it there. Already have it on PC and virtual desktop to my home PC just to play it during off hours… Already signed up for announcements.

  27. iggy April 24, 2012 1:17 pm

Yet another “please make an Android port” comment. <3

  28. Sinkwa July 25, 2012 2:12 pm

I was wondering if the game could be available on all stores in iTunes, not just the US one. I own the pc version on steam, and would love it on my ipad.

  29. Zach July 25, 2012 3:46 pm

@Sinkwa: According to the settings on my end, it should be available worldwide. Maybe contact Apple and see if something’s broken on their end?
